Nareena Switlo graduated from the University of Victoria in Anthropology with an extensive background in the entertainment and tourism sector. She went to Zanzibar as an independent volunteer and then was recruited in country as a CUSO-VSO volunteer.
She is working as a volunteer is our secure livelihoods program at the Jambiani Tourism Training Institute. It is operated by a Canadian based NGO called Hands Across Borders.
Students from all over Tanzania apply for a 2 year free program that gives them the tools and experience to work in the tourism sector. The students work in the restaurant for their practicum. Guests, students and other NGO's help to support JTTI in a unique model of giving back.
I was on holiday visiting Nareena, who is my daughter. As a mother I can say that I am proud of her contribution and growth.
Volunteer for a better world! Join CUSO-VSO, share skills and volunteer in countries in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean. Volunteer, donate, share skills.
